Reblogged this on Global Sisters Group and commented:
I
Assalam u alaikum everyone!
I wanted to reblog Mr. Siddique’s great post and reflect on it a bit.
I have already shared this verse before:
Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah , the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; [and who] establishes prayer and gives zakah; [those who] fulfill their promise when they promise; and [those who] are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous. (Sahih International Quran 2:177)
This verse mentions the freeing of slaves which is clearly one of the important acts of righteousness. I’m so glad that Mr. Siddique, PhD, raised this topic… as even in today’s world, we are faced with modern day slavery.. It is very much a global problem.
Human slavery of today is also a global industry, a substantial amount of currency is involved. The UN estimates that the total market value is at $32 billion.(UNODC’s Factsheet on Human Trafficking) And this is not something that only occurs in the developing world but rather is a reality in the developed world too. So it’s essentially a glocal issue…E.g. UN estimates that Europe 2.5 billion euros per year on forced labor and sexual exploitation..
My point of this is that we could learn a lot from this Hadith, and this verse in the Quran. Today’s modern day slavery isn’t perhaps as visible as it was in the past… it’s often invisible (e.g. child laborers, sex traffickers, forced laborers, child beggars, ect.). But just because it’s often invisible doesn’t mean it doesn’t affect us. We have to question who makes our clothes? Our electronics? And we have to try to understand the sex industry has an industry that takes advantage of the vulnerable, and it is a fact many are forced into this industry…
The challenge is how do we free the modern slaves of today? At least in Islam, it is clear that this is important for Muslims to ponder upon, but not only to think about but act on. It’s our responsibility to try to tackle these major social problems, and do our best to manumit, i.e. free slaves.
ALHAMDOLLILLAH! Keep up the good work! The idea is to spread the hadith of our Rasool to the hearts of men and women and make dua that we all instill it in our hearts, minds and body.
